- Dowl rod
- Yarn in your choice of colors (I used super saver yarn in Aran and black)
- Size H-5.00mm hook
- Yarn needle
Cut the dowl rod to the desired length with a saw or have a pro do it if you are uncomfortable handling a saw. In my case I cut it to 11 inches.
Row 1: Start with a slip knot and do 34 sc (single crochet) around the rod, ch (chain) 1, turn. (see pic below).
Row 2: Sc in each stitch across (34) ch 1, turn.
Row 3-29: Repeat row 2
Row 30: Single crochet 2 together, also known as a decrease (insert hook in first stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook), Sc in next 30 stitches, decrease the last 2 stitches, ch 1, turn. (32 stitches total).
Row 31: Decrease, sc in next 28 stitches, Decrease the last 2 stitches, ch 1, turn. (30)
Row 32: Decrease, sc in next 26 stitches, Decrease the last 2 stitches, ch 1, turn. (28)
Cut yarn leaving a tail for sewing, yarn over and pull yarn through loop and tighten. Weave in the ends with a yarn needle.
S: ch 26, cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew, pull yarn through and tighten.
h: ch 31, cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew, pull yarn through and tighten
a: ch 10, cut yarn leaving a tail, pull yarn through. Ch 8, cut yarn leaving a tail, pull yarn through and tighten. You will sew the shorter chain to the longer one in the shape of a c to form an a. (See pic)
l: ch 11, cut yarn leaving a tail, pull yarn through, tighten.
o: ch 11, slip stitch to first chain, cut yarn leaving a tail, yarn over pull yarn through, tighten.
m: ch 25, cut yarn leaving a tail, pull yarn through, tighten.
You will have to shape each one on the banner then use the tails to sew them on with a yarn needle. You can use pins to keep the letters in place while you sew or just shape as you go.
Hanger: Start with a slip knot and single crochet around the rod next to the banner, ch 58, sc around the rod at the other end, ch 1, cut yarn and pull it through. Weave in ends.
I hope you enjoy making these as much as I do! These are great for hanging on a front door or even a wall.
